Lucia Procession and Celebration

If you have or know of a child who would like to participate in the Lucia festivities, please contact us at

The Swedish Christmas season begins with the observance of Santa Lucia Day. A candlelight procession led by Lucia, who is crowned with candles and dressed in white in a celebration of light in the dark winter days.   She is accompanied by attendants, each carrying a candle, as well as “star boys” carrying stars. They’ll sing and tell the history of the Lucia festivities.

Much of the story is lost in the world of myth and legend, but recorded history bears witness to many of the facts.  These, blended with the myths and legends and played out against the backdrop of darkest winter, are more than anything else a paean to light—the coming of the light, light as warmth, light as promise, light as hope, light as life, light shining in the darkness.

We welcome you to this beautiful festival of light. Enjoy coffee and treats following the procession and program. We’ll dance around Christmas tree and Santa will be available to greet the children.  We appreciate contributions of baked goods or other treats.

Lucia Celebration will be held at Whitnall Park Lutheran Church, 5847 Lilac Lane, 105th and Forest Home Avenue (just east of Hwy. 100) in Hales Corners, WI

We welcome you to join us for our annual traditional Swedish Christmas Morning Worship. Julotta (Jul meaning Christmas and otta for that time just slightly before dawn) is a Swedish tradition dating back to when Swedish families would rise very early to attend Christmas worship at 5 a.m. Families would proceed to church over snowy roads in their horse-drawn sleds carrying torches to light the way. Historically, the service would end just before or at the sunrise (dawn).

Our worship service will start at 7 a.m. and will be conducted in English and Swedish. In the manner of our Swedish ancestors, the beautiful gospel is read and beloved hymns are sung in Swedish and/or English. A coffee hour with Swedish treats will follow the service.  Contributions of treats for the Julbord will be gratefully accepted.

Julotta will also be held at Whitnall Park Lutheran Church, 5847 Lilac Lane, 105th and Forest Home Avenue.

What’s In Your Trunk?
Topic Coordinator: Todd Michalek

Our ancestors came to America with only a few personal possessions, which were often packed in a single trunk. Please join us as we open a real America Trunk and discuss the mementos from our Swedish Ancestors. To do this, we need your help. Please consider bringing something from your immigrant past so we may “Pack the Trunk” and share your stories at the January meeting. If anyone has a story to share or recipe that has been passed down through the generations that either you or we can make and feature in our January meeting, please email us at
