SWEDISH WITCHES-FOLKLORE & TRIALS

at Redemption Lutheran Church

4057 N. Mayfair Rd. (Hwy. 100, just north of Capitol Dr.)

Wauwatosa, Wisconsin

According to Swedish Folklore, Maundy Thursday was time for all Swedish witches (häxor) to grab their broomsticks from hiding to fly off to celebrate the Witches’ Sabbath.  On Holy Saturday it was time to fly back home and attend Easter Sunday service with everyone else in the village, but be careful not to say your prayers backwards. That would be a sure way to be identified as a witch.

Getting too old to fly at night on that rickety old broom, please consider a more modern form of transportation and join us on Saturday, March 9, 2019 at 1:30 p.m., as we welcome Amber Rose, Ph.D. Candidate in Scandinavian Studies-Folklore, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Assistant Acquisitions Editor with The University of Wisconsin Press. Amber will tell us the story of Swedish witches and witch trials in the period (1450-1700).

We’ll end with an exploration of today’s contemporary tradition of Swedish Witches at Easter time. Who knows, we may even have an Easter Witch or two in attendance at the meeting?
